What's in a picture: Southwark, Deptford, Rotherhithe

F

'King of  May' or 'Tree of Life'

Southwark is London's most historic borough. It has witnessed and participated in a wide variety of  events over the centuries, playing a crucial role not only in London's history, but in shaping the very world we live in today. Fortunately, the events of the 'Horrible Histories' are not unpunishedly and as easily to be repeated, as God is closer than ever to take man to task on every sin, and man has progressed morally on the way of truth and justice of Jesus Christ so much more since Henry VIII.'s and Elisabeth I.'s days - or have we not?!

Rotherhithe

"When one goes to Redriffe* (former name for Rotherhithe) ...a man would suspect himself in another country. Their manner of living, speaking, acting, dressing and behaving are so peculiar to themselves. Yet withal they are the bravest and boldest of fellows." John Fielding 1776.
